Nepali Community living in United Kingdom celebrated Dashain festival.
Nepali community living in various parts of the United Kingdom celebrated Bijaya Dashami, the greatest Hindu festival, with great enthusiasm and jubilation. The Greater Reading Nepali Community organised a quiz contest on the occasion of happy Bijaya Dashami. A total of 25 students participated in the senior category while 19 took part in the children’s category. Salil Gurung, Prabhat Adhikari , Sahara Gurung, Sophia Gurung and Ujjwal Gurung came out first in the senior category while Anjali Gurung, Anita Gurung, Khem Gurung, Sophia Gurung and Anju Gurung were the first runner up. Likewise, in the children’s category, Sanjog Banstola, Jyotsana Pudasaini, Abhiyan Bhandari and Swechha Banstola became first while Pushpa Gautam, Arju Gurung, Yushika Thapa and Uddheshya Gurung came out second in the quiz contest. Dikshya Ghimire, Akisha Acharya, Samriddhi Lamichhane and Nischal Timalsina became third while Sahara Pogati, Subrit Thapa and Bidhan Kandel received consolation prize. Giving away prizes and certificates to the winning team members, Chairman of Greater Reading Nepali Community Association Arjun Basnet expressed best wishes to all the Nepali community living in the area. Cultural programme was also held to mark the occasion where a number of Nepali and British national performed traditional and modern Nepali dance. Community members enjoyed the traditional Nepali meal and exchanged best wishes on the happy occasion of Nepal’s main festival. Such programmes were organised in other areas of the United Kingdom. Though there is no exact figure of the Nepali living in the United Kingdom, it is estimated that about 100,000 Nepali live in various parts of the country at present. With the recent court verdict in favour of the ex Gurkhas, it is expected that about 7,000 ex Gurkhas and their family members will be allowed to live in the United Kingdom. People received Tika and blessings from the elders in group and organised various social and cultural programmes to celebrate the greatest national festival of Nepal. The festival was celebrated with great zeal and joyousness among the Nepali community in London, Reading, North Yorkshire, Farnborough, Aldershot, Folkestone , Plumstead and other areas where the number of Nepali is quite higher. Nepali community organisations in other places also organised programmes to mark the festival with delight. |
